First Day Working Remote

Today Was Interesting

So it was my very first day working officially remote. Things are real weird when you're working remote. Not every remembers that you're not in the office which also means you may not get the same level of attention as someone who slides their chair over to get some consultation.

Losses

  • Hangout call audio
    • Having >2 particpants, it was awful; at least with two parties not having headphones. The reverbs made some peoples' speech incomprehensible.
    • Sometimes laggy, but I attribute that to the VPN setting up it's own default gateway. (That'll be a later battle of mine)
  • Routing setup
    • VPN is still broken from my [main workstation] linux box so I'm stuck using a MacBook. Keep in mind that I'm far from well versed in OSX.

Wins

  • I made a difference in logging?
    • System has overly expanding /var/log/mail.log
    • RCA points to /etc/hosts and postfix misconfiguration
    • Simple resolution via Ansible
